2015 – Scott Turgeon (Florida)

With 2 parents who have Ph.D.’s in Marine Biology, I guess I was destined to be in love with the ocean. I remember at a very early age ‘snorkeling’ in the bathtub until shivering uncontrollably and finally being forced to get out. I also remember the 1st profession I ever chose at about age 4, I wanted to be a Frogman. My introduction to actual snorkeling (besides in the bathtub) came at age 5 in Mombasa, Kenya. If I was not already destined to become a freediver, I most certainly was after that experience. But fast forward with life and I did not have the opportunity to fulfill my childhood dream of diving until I moved to West Palm Beach, Florida in 1995 after graduating from LSU with my Master’s in Wildlife. I SCUBA dove and worked on local charter boats as a DiveMaster for a couple years but quickly became bored by what felt more to me like killing, rather than hunting. Thanks to Terry Maas’ book Bluewater Hunting and a couple local freedive spearos taking me out and showing me the ropes, I quickly set out on a new, more exciting journey that I am still on today. I was one of the original founding fathers of the Palm Beach Freedivers in 1998 and served as their first President for the 1st three years of their existence. My 1st USOA Nationals was in 1999 and by my 3rd Nationals in 2001, I was National Champion. I am still in love with the ocean and freediving and still continue to participate in Nationals. I hope to someday make Team USA again and represent my Country on the largest freedive spearfishing stage in the World.
